SYDNEY — An Eskasoni family is seeking answers months after the death of a seven-year-old girl who was said to be in the care of Mi’kmaw Family and Children Services.

A #JusticeForCadence memorial walk was held Sunday in Eskasoni to pay tribute to Cadence Poulette, who had been found unresponsive by a father and son entering the pool area of the Holiday Inn Sydney – Waterfront. The incident was said to have likely occurred in early November. Eskasoni resident Marina Young, a relative of Cadence Poulette, said the young girl was airlifted to IWK children’s hospital in Halifax, where she “succumbed to her coma” on Nov. 13.

“I’m really angry; I just want answers as to what happened to her,” said Dina Poulette, Cadence’s grandmother.

Young said that Dina Poulette personally requested to Mi’kmaw Family and Children Services that they should not take Cadence swimming, but “they still did it anyway.

“I was afraid this was going to happen,” said Poulette. “This has been really hard on me. I haven’t been able to sleep at night. And all I’m getting is no answers as to what happened to her.”

Eunice Cabot, Cadence’s great aunt, said she wondered whether the hotel had any cameras in the pool area that would have captured the November incident.
