KEY POINTS

  • Blackpink’s last musical project was in 2020
  • YG Entertainment says the group is in the “final stages of recording their album”
  • They will start their world tour by the end of 2022

Blackpink’s entertainment label has confirmed that the group will return to the music scene with a new album. The new music project will release in August.

YG Entertainment said the quartet was in the final stages of recording their new album and would film a music video later this month. Jennie Kim, Roseanne Park, Lisa Manobal and Kim Ji-Soo will also embark on “the largest-ever” world tour by a K-pop girl group by the end of 2022.

“A lot of music in Blackpink’s style has been prepared with great effort for a long time,” the music label said in a statement, Koreaboo reported. “Blackpink will embark on the largest-ever world tour for a K-Pop girl group by the end of the year alongside their comeback to expand their communication and reach with fans across the world. We will continue large-scale projects for the group as well.”

Blackpink is yet to return to the music studio as a group since the release of their first studio-length album, “The Album,” in 2020.

“The Album” contains the smash hit “How You Like That,” which surpassed over 1 billion views on YouTube last November. It also contains Blackpink’s collaboration track with Selena Gomez, “Ice Cream,” which debuted at No. 13 on Billboard Hot 100 when it was released in 2020.

Like most K-pop artists, the group took a backseat and stopped their activities during the coronavirus lockdown in 2020. Shortly after, the members started promoting their solo activities – Rose released her solo album, “R,” in March 2021, followed by Lisa’s successful solo project, “Lalisa,” in September. Jennie released her album “Solo” in 2018, while Jisoo starred in JTBC’s “Snowdrop” opposite Jung Hae-In, which was aired on Disney+.

Blackpink also dethroned Justin Bieber for the most number of subscribers on YouTube, Billboard reported. The “Fire” singers reached 75 million subscribers on June 28 and edged out Bieber, who had 69.3 million subscribers.

“Our BLINKS contributed a lot to this achievement,” the quartet said in a statement at the time. “We will continue to bring positivity and great energy through our music videos.”
